Ballast tank invaders wreaking havoc

A disseminação de espécies invasivas realizadas em todo o mundo, em tanques de lastro dos navios está causando prejuízos de milhares de milhões de libras por ano, alertou conservacionistas. Criaturas como o chinês mitten crab (caranguejos) foram capazes de estabelecer-se nos novos habitats após serem transportados a partir de suas casas naturais na água de lastro.

The spread of invasive species carried across the world in the ballast tanks of ships is causing billions of pounds of damage each year, conservationists warned today. Creatures such as the Chinese mitten crab have been able to establish themselves in new habitats after being transported from their natural homes in ballast water.
About 7,000 marine and coastal species travel across the world's oceans every day, a report for wildlife conservation charity WWF said. According to the study for WWF, last year 84 per cent of the world's marine regions had reported findings of invasive species, with shipping a major reason for their spread.

WWF e Wallenius Wilhemsen estão unidos por uma vontade comum para sustentar um ambiente marinho saudável e tem um acordo para melhorar a conservação da natureza marinhos no alto mar ou seja, zonas marítimas fora da jurisdição nacional (> 200 nm). A WWF tem um Programa de Conservação para o Alto-mar, uma abordagem holística da gestão do ambiente marinho, que foi desenvolvido como resultado das crescentes ameaças para o alto mar para proteger os recursos do alto mar.

WWF is globally collaborating with several shipping companies and organisations to enhance environmentally sound shipping in the seas and oceans. WWF and Wallenius Wilhemsen are united by a common desire to sustain a healthy marine environment and have an agreement to enhance marine nature conservation in the High Seas i.e. sea areas beyond national jurisdiction (>200 nm). WWF has a High Seas Conservation Programme, a holistic approach to marine environment management which has been developed as a result of the increasing threats to the High Seas to protect the resources of the High Seas.
